Questions? We've got answers.
The stuff people ask us most, from ruling widths to how our shop links work.
Can I buy directly from I Am Stationery?
Nope, we're a storefront without a warehouse. Our "Shop now" buttons send you to outside retailers, and they handle checkout, shipping, returns and customer service.
How does this site make money?
Some of our outbound links are, or may become, affiliate links. If you make a qualifying purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That's why those links are marked sponsored, and it doesn't change what we write. Full disclosure is in the footer of every page.
Why no prices, ratings or reviews?
Prices change daily, and we won't post star ratings for products we haven't personally tested. We'd rather explain what to look for so you can size up any product yourself.
What's the difference between wide ruled and college ruled?
Wide ruled lines are about 11/32 inch apart, good for younger kids and larger handwriting. College ruled lines are about 9/32 inch apart and fit more on a page. See the Notebooks & Journals aisle.
Is a #2 pencil the same as HB?
Roughly, yes. The US numbering system and the HB letter system aren't perfectly standardized, but a #2 is generally equivalent to HB. More in the Pencils aisle.
What does 20 lb paper mean?
It's the basis weight of bond paper: 500 sheets at the standard 17 x 22 inch size weigh 20 pounds. It works out to about 75 gsm. Our paper weight guide has a full conversion chart.
What paper is best for fountain pens?
Smooth paper around 24 lb bond (90 gsm) or heavier usually works well. Coating and smoothness matter as much as weight. Check out How to Choose a Fountain Pen.
What envelope fits a folded letter?
A #10 envelope (4 1/8 x 9 1/2 inches) fits Letter paper folded in thirds. For folded note cards, use A2; for 5 x 7 cards, use A7. The full chart is in Cards & Envelopes.
When should I buy an academic planner?
Academic planners usually start in July or August. They hit stores in late spring and early summer, which is the best time for selection.
When do schools go back in the US?
It depends on the district. Many schools in the South and Midwest start in early-to-mid August, while much of the Northeast starts after Labor Day. See our back-to-school supply list.
Do D-ring binders hold more than round-ring binders?
Generally yes. D-rings let pages lie flat against the back cover, so a D-ring binder usually holds more than an O-ring binder with the same ring size.
Can I suggest a new aisle or guide?
Absolutely. Drop us a note on the contact page.
